Spatial Analysis

In the manner discussed in class, please write an analysis of a gallery at the North Carolina Museum of Art. In general, I would like you to address this question: What kind of space is the North Carolina Museum of Art and how is that character articulated and reinforced by the architecture and artifacts therein? As we have discussed in class, both physical and virtual spaces are built to support routine forms of social and discursive action and these actions are reinforced by layers of information laid upon those spaces. In other words, the material and information architecture of a space helps structure the kinds of actions that take place there. In your analysis, consider the following:

• Organization and Classification – How do the organization and classification schemes reinforce a particular way of encountering or understanding the museum’s contents? How are these classification and organizational schemes architecturally reinforced?
• Navigation & Way finding – What kinds of paths can one take through the museum contents? What guides are supplied to help visitors find their ways?
• Labeling – How are the artifacts labeled and with what kind of information? How are visitor encouraged to interact with the artifacts?
• Affect – How does the museum make you feel? What are the architectural or other deign qualities that contribute to this feeling? How does this affective response enhance or detract from your encounter with museum artifacts or visitors?
